My family knows many of the old timers and founders. But I left the US at age six and pretty much gre up in Latin America: Brazil, Peru, Mexico... Came back for good at 17 to start college.

So I consider myself bicultural even though I'm a blonde WASPish looking gal, and can speak three languages. The overseas growing up helps provide objectivity to the American experience.

My moving around made it difficult later in life for me to fulfill the stereotypical Mom role. I started businesses, ran for public office, etc. and I guessj I could have done a better job fulfilling the Mrs Cleaver role, but it never was who I am. The upside is that my two girls are very independent, open minded, well traveled and love me and forgive my short comings.

I have learned in life that it is not all about getting the love we want, but realizing the fact that we are loved by others the way they know how. So really, who am I to demand others love me the way I want them to? My responsibility is simply to receive love the way it is given.

Our children are going to have to forgive us as parents- all our short comings and foibles- and realize we loved them the way we know how. But that is their responsibility and journey, not mine....

Truly, letting go and forgiving is the only way to heal. Many people never realize it has nothing to do with "letting someone off the hook". Forgiveness is a gift to ones Self.

Great chatting with you Inursha.... Best wishes on life and trading! Kids are smarter than people give them credit for and will do things to grab your attention instead of playing constructively.

For example, if I sit outside in the yard while my kids play and read a book on my iPad, somebody always whines for my attention, versus lounging with a good old paperback. I try to involve myself in their play, but I am victim of my own laziness sometimes in that regard. One thing I do that even my wife can't keep up with is read to each one of them each and every night at bedtime. My two older kids (the ones that can read) are avid readers and have even started to read on their own time simply for pleasure.

Don't get me started on the structure of the U.S. educational system. I would argue that it is more "oppressive" than "suppressive" but I am a stone cold existentialist anyway. If the spirit is never taken away, it can never be rebuilt. I just like to think that if it is done with "love" it can be a beautiful thing. It's a terribly difficult idea to comprehend, let alone explain, and it canseem cruel and inhumane at its core.

Question for ya: Are you a west-coaster by birth? Or did you end up there after being fed up with the east cost? inurshanoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3285685659201746004.post-88899231063722833112012-03-26T11:48:52.577-06:002012-03-26T11:48:52.577-06:00Wow... You sound like an enlightened parent! Brav...Wow... You sound like an enlightened parent! Bravo on your insight re taking the natural abilities and talents of each child, seeing them, affirming them and supporting them. Too many parents are trying to mold their kids into what THEY want them to be: molding a natural dancer In to an Ivy League corporate lawyer, a scientist into a gymnast, etc. Too much concentration on performance to meet the ego expectations of the parents.

No wonder your kids are well behaved! they have developed self regulation, which only comes through the opportunity to play. Certainly you have seen the strengths in your children only because they have emerged through their play patterns. Our educational system could learn something from you, Inursha! Just think of what we could accomplish if the system allowed teachers to be true teachers: to see the innate talent in each child and draw it forth. Now we ask each child to learn the same thing and expect then test them on how much they can regurgitate. How can we expect innovation from such a suppressive educational system? It has killed the spirits of our children and now they glorify it by making a movie out of their killing each other. Sick, sick, sick. (do I sound like an old fart yet?)

As you can tell, I'm a big fan of the power of play. You are right in your assessment on the ages of my children. My youngest daughter is 17 and about to fly the coop here with an AFS living experience in Argentina. Perhaps because your kids are still
little you might be interested in some of this information as it relates to parenting: www.nifplay.org

We need future leaders who know their hearts. Don't let the system steal your children's spirits. That is the best gift you can give them in the future they will be facing. They can learn the rest, but defending their hearts will become heroic acts in the world they will be living in. Bravo Dad! Parenting is then hardest job on earth, and it sounds like you are the hero for now. Your legacy will be written in their hearts, and as you know, Love is eternal.

I wish my parents had had your parenting wisdom. And I wish I had developed my insights earlier in life when my own children were younger. I was wondering how SoulJester had "confessed" this. Strange how the mind will naturally piece together loose tangles to make sense of them.

I sense that you have much older children than I do (my oldest of four is only 8) as you are already thinking of wings. Sure, I have imagined that time will come to "set them free" but I have so much more value to instill in them.

As a parent, I have tried my best to find a special characteristic that each will be confident they can excel in and push them to make it their own and do it to the best of their ability.

For example, one is very into baseball, so we constantly discuss the sport, read fiction and non-fictional representations of baseball players, and constantly practice and work on fundamentals.

Another seems to have a gift for hearing music for the true display of feeling and emotion it is. I have worked hard to practice daily so this child learns to speak and read music (something I resent not learning at a young age).

I often get comments in public how my children are so well behaved, while I watch other parents get so easily agitated and give in to their child's demands just so they will stop embarrassing them.

It is not hard to foster a child's individuality while giving them the love they need to truly become and individual and develop into a productive member of society. It just takes effort and determination.

Regarding your statement about electronic devices, I couldn't agree more. I have read pieces that discuss how children can't even comprehend NOT having the technology that currently exists, since it has become so second nature. Sure, it does a lot in the way of providing for us in the same way the industrial revolution caused irreparable changes to the human psyche.

I have so much more to say on this topic, but I have stuff to accomplish today in order to be productive myself! I can just say I am glad that you "feel it" too and I couldn't agree more that we need a complete washout of existing stigma in order to recover as a society. Maybe it will happen, maybe it won't. I, for one, know that I will always be there for my loved ones and I just hope that the rest of the world can cope with great change.inurshanoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3285685659201746004.post-6875885322454409412012-03-25T23:21:21.405-06:002012-03-25T23:21:21.405-06:00Yes it is a shame. I could bring up the hyperinflation v deflation debate, but there are far too many variables at play to avoid getting in a tangled mess.
No, I cannot give you anything more concrete than this: our financial system is broken.
It is my firm belief that we are reaching the point where the continued application of band-aids (money-printing, bailouts, debt "re-structuring") will no longer work. I know many from Daneric's are expecting the worst, but I don't think we really know what 'the worst' is. I think the total collapse in the global financial system is a real possibility and be far worse than we could imagine.
Over the event horizon, previous rules & correlations may no longer apply.
Gold simply has to play a part in a future global currency. There is no other viable alternative. The likes of BB, Buffet, Big Banks,(& maybe even Big Bird & Boris Becker) know this & that is why they see gold as a big threat to their oligopoloy. Once the US & Europe become weakened & China has more economic clout, we'll see gold take it's rightful place in the new world order.
And what would happen if, say Iran dropped a nuke? Gold up, Aussie down? You bet.
Sorry for the rant. I suppose I am a bit of a gold bug, but only because I see the writing clearly on the wall.
Anyway, my main point is this: The usual 'rules/correlations' may soon no longer apply.
And to those of the view that in Deflation gold has to go down, watch out.
It would be wrong to base your view simply on what happened in the past. We haven't see everything yet and the rules are about to be broken.
I could go on....lol
DKdarkestknightnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3285685659201746004.post-19519271647297075682012-03-24T14:46:15.968-06:002012-03-24T14:46:15.968-06:00Cannot edit from iPad.

We do n...Your devils advocate point is well taken. We do need to provide children the opened eyes and tools for dealing with the reality of the world. My challenge is how do we do this without destroying the child's heart? If more people were attuned with their own hearts this world would be a better place. As a parent I have finally reconciled myself to the following:

1. There are no guarantees no matter how good of a parent one is.
2. It's my responsibility to provide roots and wings, and then to let go of the rest and live well myself.
3. Unconditional Love Heals.

All the cool tech the kids have now is addictive and can act as a substitute for real world engagement. The fact children have lost play is huge. Real world play where a kid runs free, builds forts, negotiates pick up games (remember kick the can?), and learns to build community and resolve conflict has brought forth innovation and resiliency necessary to our species evolution. Play is actually a survival drive like sleep, and when it is SJ fessed, the are compensatory behavioral problems like addiction disorders, OCD, rigidity in thought and behavior (ever meet a playful terrorist?), bullying and domination and more.

So kids are spending 8-10 hours per day on some kind of screen and not socializing in the real world.

Play drives the prefrontal cortex cognitive development. Great cognitive skills, problem solving skills are driven by and developed from play. To put a child who has no play foundation into a drill and kill (albeit high tech) rote school setting and expect high cognitive performance is crazy. Using the Department of Education's own criteria, 80% of our schools are failing in the US. No real education reform is happening, yet Obama et al say education drives innovation. Kids are having huge problems given this lack of deep engagement, and now there is an all time best selling movie about teenagers killing one another.

Watch what happens.... Just watch.

Play drives innovation, engagement and community building, conflict resolution, optimism, empathy and more. It is biologically wired into us as a survival drive. It is not about survival of the fittest, but survival of the most resilient.

Domineering jerks aren't very high on the evolutionary ladder from a biological perspective. That's why they don't last very long. They don't promote a level playing field. The law of the playground (which is the Universe) will prevail. Playful kids always get together and figure out a way to contain the bully.

So there is great hope for humanity. Just look at Nature's patterns and see how play is anything but trivial and optional, but truly Nature's gift as the glue to bring one together with the other for creative expression.

Some day a cogent CEO type will "get" this wisdom and want to take it global, eg purpose driven, sustainable development and harness play's apparently purposeless curriculum.

That will be the day when we will be in a true bull market. Till then, systems are failing. But perhaps that is what must come first so higher wisdom ensues...divinelovenoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3285685659201746004.post-8042649934668554132012-03-24T13:20:36.075-06:002012-03-24T13:20:36.075-06:00Folks, I did it earlier than I thought. the comme...Folks, I did it earlier than I thought. the comments are flowing in here pretty quickly these days and this particular pub has run out of beer.
